While we think we are using “protective hairstyles” by braiding our hair or putting it up in a bun. In reality these tight hair styles are pulling and stretching our hair away from the roots. This can lead to breakage and hair loss, called traction alopecia.
So cornrows, braids, tight buns and ponytails are not as protective as you think. That’s why a lot of women have thinning or reclining edges.
Plus, the friction from the hair bands can cut your hair and cause further breakage.
What can we do? Minimize tight hair styles and if you put your hair up, use a silk scrunchie. Those do not cause any friction nor damage.
